Zero-Ohm Resistor Circuit Placement Guide for Factory Inventory Assessment

Put a zero-ohm resistor where the circuit benefits from a documented, removable connection rather than a permanent wire. Common uses are a PCB crossover jumper, a BOM configuration link, a selected ground connection, a removable current-measurement point, and an EMI tuning placeholder. The part is not an ideal conductor: check its package, maximum resistance, current rating, layout and actual circuit role before fitting or replacing it. This is a general practice guide, not a named customer case.

Direct answer: Put a zero-ohm resistor where the circuit benefits from a documented, removable connection rather than a permanent wire.

When this process applies

This English guide keeps the same practical focus as the source page: selecting a 0R resistor by its circuit role, package, maximum resistance, current rating, layout and the function that the connection must serve. It applies when a design, production, repair, or inventory team needs to understand why a 0R position exists, decide whether it should be fitted in a particular assembly variant, or verify that a replacement suits the circuit.

Stage 1: identify the connection's job

Circuit position Why a zero-ohm resistor may be used What to check
PCB crossover Lets a route cross on a single- or two-layer board while remaining SMT-assemblable Current path and package length
BOM configuration link Fitted or omitted to select a board option Reference designator and assembly variant
Selected ground connection Makes one ground connection visible and removable for checking Layout and return-current path
Current measurement or debug point Can be removed to open a branch or insert a meter Actual branch current and test method
EMI placeholder Keeps a line connected before a later resistor or ferrite-bead choice BOM revision and post-test component choice

A 0R link records a decision in the BOM and on the PCB. It does not make the underlying routing, grounding or filtering decision by itself.

Stage 2: size the connection for the real path

Read the complete part number and data sheet, then record the package size, maximum resistance and rated current. Current capability varies by package, manufacturer and series. A larger package may suit a longer crossover or a higher-current path, but the pads, copper area, vias, ambient temperature and surge conditions still need checking. Do not select a part only because its body marking says 0R or 000.

For a supply branch, also confirm that the connection is not being used as a substitute for a defined protection or sensing component. A normal 0R resistor may open under excessive current, but it does not provide the specified breaking or time-current behaviour of a fuse. A non-zero low-resistance sensing resistor has a stated value and measurement role that should remain separate.

Stage 3: keep assembly and inventory records traceable

Use one inventory row per complete part number, package, Lot / D/C and packaging state. Keep the reference designator, intended circuit role, rated-current source, and assembly-variant or DNP status where available. A DNP position is a board location that is not fitted for that variant; a visible reference designator does not by itself mean the stock must be issued.

Boundaries

Do not assume a zero-ohm resistor is an unlimited-current wire. Do not treat it as a fuse, a non-zero sensing resistor, or a permanent substitute for a ferrite bead. Do not claim that a 0R link alone improves ground noise or EMI performance: layout, return paths and later test results still control that decision. Do not substitute different packages or brands without checking the specific data sheet and circuit requirement.

Next step

For each 0R position, record its circuit role, BOM reference, assembly variant, complete part number, package, maximum resistance, current rating and reel label. Mark unclear or mixed stock pending, then verify any replacement against the relevant schematic and data sheet before production or repair.
